Tooth extraction cost in India (2026)

What it costs to have a tooth removed in India, why surgical and wisdom tooth extractions cost more, and when to ask about saving the tooth.

A simple tooth extraction in India typically costs ₹600 to ₹6,400 per tooth. A surgical extraction, such as an impacted wisdom tooth, costs more, about ₹7,200 to ₹16,300 at a national clinic chain. The government's CGHS rates run from ₹400 for a normal tooth to ₹5,000 for a wisdom tooth stuck in bone.

These are typical ranges reported by Indian clinics in 2025-26, and they vary by city and clinic. Before price, though, ask one question: can this tooth be saved? I explain why below.

How to read these prices

These are typical ranges reported by Indian clinics in 2025-26. Most chains publish a starting price, so your quote can be higher. Prices vary by city and clinic. No single clinic sets the market price.

What affects the cost of tooth extraction

  • Simple or surgical

A tooth that has fully come out can usually be removed with forceps. A broken tooth, or one stuck under the gum or bone, needs surgery.

  • Which tooth

Back teeth have more roots than front teeth. Wisdom teeth are often harder to reach and may be impacted.

  • X-rays

A small X-ray may be enough. A wisdom tooth may need a full jaw X-ray (OPG). These are often billed separately.

  • Extra steps

Some clinics offer socket preservation with a bone graft, to help if you plan an implant later. That adds to the cost.

  • Your city and clinic

CGHS sets a normal extraction at ₹400 in Tier I cities and 10% to 20% less in smaller cities. Private clinics usually charge more than this.

What is usually included

  • Local anaesthetic to numb the area.
  • Removal of the tooth, with stitches if needed.
  • Gauze and written aftercare instructions.
  • A review visit, at many clinics. Ask if it is included.

X-rays, medicines and bone grafts are often extra. Our post extraction instructions explain what to do in the first hours and days.

Simple, surgical and wisdom tooth extraction compared

TypeWhen it is neededPublished prices per tooth (₹)
Simple extractionTooth fully visible and in one piece₹600 at one chain. ₹1,890 to ₹6,390 at another. CGHS ₹400
Complicated extraction under local anaestheticBroken or decayed tooth, curved rootsCGHS ₹800. Private clinics price this within their simple or surgical range
Wisdom tooth stuck in gumPartly covered by gumCGHS ₹2,000
Surgical or impacted extractionTooth stuck in bone, needs gum and bone work₹7,190 to ₹16,300 at a national chain. CGHS ₹5,000

Private clinic prices sit well above CGHS rates. CGHS rates are what the government pays empanelled hospitals, so treat them as a reference point.

Questions to ask your dentist

  • Can this tooth be saved with a filling or root canal? What would that cost?
  • Is this a simple or surgical extraction?
  • Is the X-ray included in the price?
  • Are stitches, medicines and the review visit included?
  • If I want an implant later, do I need socket preservation now?
  • For a wisdom tooth: does it need to come out now, or can we watch it?

Cheaper vs pricier options, honestly

Extraction is often the lowest bill on the day. It is not always the lowest cost over time. A gap from a missing back tooth can let other teeth tilt and shift. Replacing it later with an implant or bridge usually costs much more than saving it. Compare with our root canal cost guide and the implant guide.

Sometimes extraction is the right choice. A tooth may be too broken to save, or a wisdom tooth may keep getting infected. In that case, pay for a careful extraction and good aftercare. Avoid choosing a clinic on the lowest price for a surgical case.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cost of tooth extraction in India?

A simple tooth extraction in India typically costs ₹600 to ₹6,400 per tooth. A surgical or impacted tooth extraction, such as a stuck wisdom tooth, costs about ₹7,200 to ₹16,300 at a national chain. The government CGHS rate ranges from ₹400 for a normal tooth to ₹5,000 for a tooth impacted in bone.

How much does wisdom tooth removal cost in India?

If the wisdom tooth has come out fully, it is often priced like a simple extraction. If it is stuck in the gum or bone, it needs surgery. One national chain lists impacted tooth removal at ₹7,190 to ₹16,300. CGHS pays ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 for the same procedure.

Is extraction cheaper than a root canal?

Yes, on the day. But a missing tooth can let nearby teeth drift, and replacing it later with a bridge or implant usually costs far more than a root canal and crown. Ask your dentist whether the tooth can be saved before deciding on price alone.

Does the extraction price include the X-ray?

Not always. Many clinics charge for X-rays separately. A wisdom tooth may need a full jaw X-ray called an OPG. Ask for the X-ray fee when you get your quote.

How long does it take to recover after an extraction?

Most people feel better in a few days. The gum takes a few weeks to close fully. A surgical extraction can take longer. Follow your dentist's aftercare instructions closely.

Why does a surgical extraction cost so much more?

A surgical extraction may need a cut in the gum, removal of some bone, cutting the tooth into pieces and stitches. It takes longer, needs more skill and has more follow-up. That is why it costs more.

See a dentist in person if…

  • You have swelling in your face or jaw, or a fever.
  • You cannot open your mouth fully, or it hurts to swallow.
  • Bleeding after an extraction does not slow after firm pressure on gauze.
  • Pain gets worse 2 to 4 days after an extraction instead of better.

Facial swelling with fever, or trouble breathing or swallowing, needs urgent care the same day.
