Dental crown cost in India (2026): tooth cap price by type

What a tooth cap costs in India, how the material changes the price, and how to choose the right crown for each tooth.

A dental crown (tooth cap) in India typically costs ₹2,100 to ₹15,000 per tooth. Metal crowns cost the least. Metal-ceramic (PFM) crowns cost about ₹3,700 to ₹8,900, and zirconia and all-ceramic crowns about ₹7,600 to ₹15,000. Crowns on implants cost more.

These are typical ranges reported by Indian clinics in 2025-26, and they vary by city and clinic. For reference, the government's CGHS rate is ₹2,000 for a metal crown and ₹3,000 for a metal-ceramic crown in a Tier I city.

How to read these prices

These are typical ranges reported by Indian clinics in 2025-26. Most chains publish a starting price, so your quote can be higher. Prices vary by city and clinic. No single clinic sets the market price.

What affects the price of a tooth cap

  • The material

This is the biggest factor. Metal is the lowest cost. Zirconia and all-ceramic crowns can cost 4 times as much.

  • How the crown is made

Some metal-ceramic crowns use a laser-sintered metal base (DMLS). They cost more than standard cast-metal ones.

  • Natural tooth or implant

A crown on an implant needs extra parts and costs more.

  • Extra work first

A root canal, a post and core, or a build-up may be needed before the crown. These are usually separate charges.

  • Your city and the lab

Metro clinics and premium labs usually cost more. CGHS rates are 10% to 20% lower in smaller cities.

What is usually included

  • Shaping the tooth and taking an impression or scan.
  • A temporary crown while the lab makes yours, at many clinics.
  • The lab fee for the crown.
  • Fitting, cementing and checking your bite.

Root canal treatment, post and core, and X-rays are usually extra.

Questions to ask your dentist

  • Which crown material are you quoting, and why for this tooth?
  • Does the price include the temporary crown and the lab fee?
  • Do I need a root canal or a post and core first? What do they cost?
  • Which lab makes the crown?
  • If the crown chips or comes loose, is the repair charged?

Cheaper vs pricier options, honestly

For a back tooth that does not show when you smile, a metal or metal-ceramic crown is a sensible lower-cost choice. Metal crowns need less of the tooth to be trimmed.

For front teeth, looks matter more. Zirconia or all-ceramic crowns look more natural, and that is what the extra cost buys.

Zirconia costs more than metal-ceramic but has no metal, so there is no dark line at the gum. Whether that matters depends on the tooth and your smile. If you are getting a crown after a root canal, see root canal treatment cost for the total. For crowns on implants, see the implant guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the tooth cap price in India?

A tooth cap (dental crown) in India typically costs ₹2,100 to ₹15,000 per tooth. Metal caps cost the least, from about ₹2,100. Metal-ceramic caps cost about ₹3,700 to ₹8,900. Zirconia and all-ceramic caps cost about ₹7,600 to ₹15,000.

Is a tooth cap the same as a dental crown?

Yes. Cap is the everyday word for a crown. It is a cover that fits over the whole visible part of a damaged tooth.

Which tooth cap suits a back tooth?

There is no single right answer. Back teeth take heavy biting force, so strength matters. Metal, metal-ceramic and zirconia crowns are all used on back teeth. Ask your dentist which suits your bite, how much tooth is left and your budget.

How long does a dental crown last?

It depends on the material, your bite, grinding habits and how well you clean around it. Decay can still start at the edge of a crown. Regular check-ups and good brushing help it last longer.

Why is a crown on an implant more expensive?

An implant crown needs extra parts to connect it to the implant, and more precise lab work. One national chain lists implant crowns from about ₹8,400 for metal-ceramic and ₹10,800 for zirconia, compared with about ₹4,300 and ₹8,900 on a natural tooth.

Does a crown need a root canal first?

Not always. A crown is often placed after a root canal on a back tooth. It can also cover a tooth with a large filling or a crack where the nerve is healthy. Your dentist will check the nerve with tests and an X-ray.

See a dentist in person if…

  • Your crown has come off. Keep it safe and take it with you.
  • A crowned tooth hurts when you bite, or the gum around it is swollen.
  • Your crown has cracked or chipped.
  • Your bite feels high or uneven after a new crown.
